JANET BURROWAY was born in Tucson in 1936. Educated at the University of Arizona, and then Barnard, Cambridge and Yale, she has been employed in various academic teaching positions since the award of her MA in 1965. Her works began to appear, starting with serial publication of short stories, in the 1950s. Her first novel, Descend Again, was published in 1960, and has been followed by seven more, as well as volumes of poetry, essays and criticism, plays, children’s books and autobiography. She is the author of one of the key teaching works about the pursuit of letters, Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft, now in its tenth edition. She lives in Chicago.
