PETER JAMIESON was born in Lerwick in 1898. He left school at 15, and slowly developed an interest in Shetland writing and the Shetland dialect. His first book, The Viking Isles, was published in 1933. He founded the famous New Shetlander magazine in 1947, which has fostered writing on and in Shetland vigorously since its inception. His only other book, Letters on Shetland, was published in 1949. He passionately continued his advocacy for his island home, both in its arts and its politics, until his death in 1976, at the age of 77.
