SHEILA GEAR was born in 1942 in Oxford but, after the war, the family moved up to Aberdeen where she went to school and then to Aberdeen University where she studied Zoology. Summer holidays were always spent on the island of Foula, which her grandfather had bought at the beginning of last century. She married an islander and has lived there very happily ever since. She is a keen crofter, breeding sheep and Shetland ponies and has a great interest in the island's wildlife and culture.
